The Importance of Reliability During Load Management and Peak Demand

As summer temperatures rise, so does electricity use. Air conditioners and fans run longer and homes use more energy to stay comfortable. For electric cooperatives like Pioneer, summer brings both an opportunity and a responsibility: maintaining reliable service while managing periods of high demand.

Reliable electricity is something members depend on every day. Homes, farms, businesses, and essential community services all rely on dependable power, especially during periods of extreme heat.

During the summer months, electricity demand changes throughout the day. Usage typically increases in the mid- to late afternoon and early evening, as temperatures peak and families return home — cooling homes, preparing meals, and using appliances at the same time.

These short periods of higher electricity use, known as peak demand periods, may last only a few hours, but they place additional strain on the electric system and increase the cost of delivering power. For electric cooperatives, wholesale power costs are influenced not only by how much electricity members use overall, but also by how much energy is needed at one time.

That is why managing peak demand matters.

At Pioneer, reliability begins long before temperatures climb. Throughout the year, crews maintain infrastructure and upgrade equipment, and engineers monitor system performance and plan for future growth. Investments in substations, power lines, and technology help strengthen the electric system and support reliable service when demand is highest.

But reliability is not built through infrastructure alone. As a member-owned cooperative, Pioneer derives its strength from partnership with its members.

One example of that partnership is Pioneer’s load management programs, which help reduce strain on the electric system during periods of peak demand by temporarily shifting or reducing electricity use on electric water heaters and central air conditioning systems. These programs are designed to support reliability while helping control wholesale power costs.

While savings vary from year to year, every kilowatt reduced during periods of peak demand helps lower overall power costs and strengthens system reliability for the entire membership.

Summer comfort remains important — especially during heat advisories and extended hot weather. The goal of load management is not to inconvenience members, but to work together to use energy wisely when demand is greatest.

Even small actions can make a big impact. Adjusting thermostats a few degrees higher, delaying the use of major appliances until later in the evening, or participating in load management programs can collectively reduce strain on the system during high-demand periods.

One of the greatest strengths of the cooperative model is shared responsibility. By working together, we help maintain a reliable electric system that serves our communities not only during the hottest days of summer, but year-round.

Smart ways to help during peak demand

Simple actions can make a big difference during summer peak hours:

  • Raise your thermostat a two to three degrees during peak demand periods.
  • Delay running large appliances like dishwashers and dryers until later in the after 8 p.m.
  • Charge electric vehicles overnight, when demand is lower.
  • Avoid unnecessary electricity use during late afternoon and early evening hours.

Small shifts across many households help reduce strain on the electric system, support reliability, and help control costs for the cooperative and its members.

When it occurs

Peak demand often occurs in the late afternoon to early evening on the hottest summer days. However, because we are part of PJM — the regional electric grid operator that manages power across Ohio and neighboring states — load control in Ohio may also occur on milder days due to high temperatures in other PJM states.
