Pioneer Electric – Protecting Yourself from Scams
Technology has made life easier in many ways, from paying bills online to managing smart devices at home. But unfortunately, it has also created new opportunities for scammers. Electric co-ops across the country are seeing more and more attempts to trick members through phone calls, emails, and text messages.
We want to help you protect your personal information. Here are some of the most common scams targeting co-op members and how you can avoid them.
We’ll Never Call and Demand Immediate Payment
A common scam involves someone calling and pretending to be from the co-op. They might threaten to disconnect your power unless you pay right away. In many cases, they’ll ask for payment through gift cards, prepaid debit cards, or mobile payment apps like Venmo or Cash App.
Pioneer Electric will never demand payment this way. If your account is behind, you’ll receive official notices and we’ll never take payment verbally over the phone. You can also check your account balance or make a payment, if necessary through the SmartHub app.
We Don’t Do Door-to-Door Sales or Collections
Another scam involves individuals showing up at members’ homes pretending to represent the co-op. They may try to collect payments on the spot or sell products or services.
Pioneer Electric does not send employees door-to-door to sell anything or collect payments. Co-op employees and contractors always carry official identification. If you’re unsure about someone at your door, don’t provide any information until you call the co-op to confirm.
Be Careful with Emails and Text Messages
Scammers often use “phishing” messages to try to steal your information. These emails or texts might look like they’re from your co-op but often include:
- Warnings of immediate disconnection
- Links to fake “pay now” websites
- Typos or unusual wording
- Generic greetings like “Dear Customer”
Always go directly to Pioneer Electric’s official website, pioneerec.com, or call the office at 800.762.0997 if you’re unsure. Avoid clicking on links or opening attachments you weren’t expecting.
Protect Your Accounts and Devices
Taking simple steps can make a big difference:
- Use strong, unique passwords for your online account.
- Keep your computer, phone, and smart devices updated.
- Secure your Wi-Fi with a strong password and encryption.
