Geothermal Heating & Cooling: How It Works and How Much You’ll Save

Are you interested in upgrading your heating and cooling system? If you’re looking for an energy efficient, eco-friendly, long-term solution – then geothermal energy might be right for you. Geothermal heating systems gained significant popularity in the 1980s and with new technological advancements more than 1.7 million geothermal heat pumps have been installed in the United States. The US Department of Energy estimates geothermal heat pumps will be installed in 36 million homes by 2050.

How does it work?

Geothermal systems use the stable temperatures beneath the Earth’s surface to heat and cool your home efficiently. A series of underground pipes circulate fluid, transferring heat into your home in the winter and pulling heat out in the summer.

How does it compare?

Most homes use natural gas, oil, electric furnaces, air conditioning or air-source heat pumps. These traditional systems are effective, but usually cost more to operate, require regular maintenance and have shorter lifespans compared to geothermal.

How much will I save?

Geothermal systems are about 400% efficient, meaning they produce four units of energy for every one unit consumed. While the upfront cost is higher, they offer 30 –70% lower energy bills, and last 25 years or more.

Are there rebates and incentives available?

Homeowners can receive a federal tax credit of up to 30% for installing geothermal heating and cooling systems in their homes through 2033. Additionally, Pioneer Electric is offering residential members bill credits for installing a geothermal system with electric or fossil fuel backup:

  • $800 for qualifying geothermal installation
  • $200 for participating in Pioneer’s Cool Returns Load Management Program
  • Bonus $400 for installing a new closed-loop geothermal system (total up to $1,400)
